Vembanad Lake, located in the Kottayam district of Kerala, is the largest lakes in India (in Kerala state also) and the longest lake in the country, which is divided into three different districts of the state of Kerala. The length of this lake is 96 km and the width is 14 km. The lake is a haven for migratory birds, with Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary being the most famous.
Vembanad Lake is the second largest Ramsar (swamp) site in India after the Sundarbans in West Bengal with an area of 2114 square kilometers. It was declared a Ramsar site in 2002.
The lake is best known for birdwatching, backwater house-boating, and photography. The best time to visit Vembanad Lake is during the Nehru Trophy Boat Race which is held at the core of the largest lake in India.
An annual survey has been conducted by India’s well-known environmental NGO “Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment” to find out the number of fish species in Vembanad Lake in Kerala.
The survey has recorded 100 species of fish in Vembanad Lake, including 92 fin fish and 8 shellfish species. Some exotic species like red belly fish, iridescent shark catfish and tilapia have also been found in different parts of Vembanad Lake. This was the 14th annual survey conducted in Vembanad Lake.
Vembanad Lake is a haven for migratory birds, of which Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the most famous. Along with this, on the occasion of Onam, the famous boat race and snake boat race are organized in the backwaters.
