Jantar Mantar History
Raja Sawai Jai Singh II was an accomplished scholar. It is said that during the reign of Muhammad Shah, a debate broke out between Hindu and Muslim astronomers regarding the position of the planets. Therefore Emperor Muhammad Shah entrusted him with the task of verifying and correcting the existing data on the motion of celestial bodies. Apart from this, Raja Jai Singh also wanted to refine the ancient Islamic Zij table so that he could know the exact time of the day. And they wanted to make accurate astrological predictions for both personal and social benefits by making accurate calendars. For this, he built Jantar Mantar in the year 1724 and built the first observatory in Delhi. After this, other observatories were also built in Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura.
Jantar Mantar is a wonderful example of the scientific progress of ancient India. The Jantar Mantar of Delhi is inspired by the observatory of Samarkand. Various instruments have been installed here to measure the speed of the planets. Samrat Yantra is the biggest instrument here which gives information about the position and time of planets with the help of the Sun. The Egyptian Yantra here can measure the shortest and longest day of the year and the Ram Yantra and Jai Prakash Yantra tell about the movement of celestial bodies.
Although these instruments of Jantar Mantar are technically amazing, but after the construction of tall buildings nearby, it is no longer possible to take accurate measurements from them.
Let us tell you that by 1867 the condition of Delhi’s Jantar Mantar had become very bad. After that, the work of restoring it was done by the government. Today this Jantar Mantar has become a popular tourist destination that is famous all over India.
How does Jantar Mantar work?
Delhi’s Jantar Mantar houses 13 architectural astronomy instruments, used to compile astronomical tables and predict the motion and timing of the Sun, Moon, and planets. The construction and placement of this instrument allowed the observer to note the positions of heavenly bodies with the naked eye alone.
Please tell that Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur had a great interest in astronomical observations and studying all systems. So he built this observatory on the instructions of Muhammad Shah. Jantar Mantar is constructed of bricks, and rubble and then plastered with lime over it. Later these instruments have been restored from time to time without any major changes.
The system at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar dates back to Ptolemaic astronomy in Egypt, which followed three classical astronomical coordinates to track the positions of the celestial bodies. Four instruments have been made here namely Samrat Yantra, Jai Prakash, Ram Yantra, and Mishra Yantra.
