The first foundation stone for the construction of the Birla Mandir in Kolkata was laid in 1970. This temple was built by India’s richest and largest industrialist family ‘Birla Family’. All the Birla temples in India have been build by the ‘Birla family’.

It took a long time about 26 years to complete the construction of this temple. This temple and the sanctum sanctorum built in this temple were inaugurated by Dr. Karan Singh on February 21, 1996. while the work of consecration of idols in this temple was done by Swami Chidanand Maharaj.

The architecture of Birla Mandir in Kolkata

This very beautiful structure of Birla Mandir in Kolkata was designed by architect Nomi Bose. The length of this temple is 160feet, it is built in an area of about 2,940 square meters. The structure of this temple has been considered one of the most spectacular structures of the 20th century. Two styles have been mixed in the structure style of this temple. 1. Modern Style 2. Contemporary Style.

This temple is similar to the construction of the famous Lingaraja Temple and Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Bhubaneswar. The temple is built like three corn-cob-shaped towers. Genuine white marble and cream-colored sandstone have been used for the construction of this Mandir which has been exquisitely carved by highly skilled craftsmen. The inner part of the Birla Mandir complex is made of white marble and the outer part of sandstone.

The Complex Rajasthani architecture has also been incorporated into the construction structure of the temple. As per the Rajasthani architecture, the walls of this temple have intricate Rajasthani style designs as well as pictorial glimpses of verses and scenes from the Bhagavad Gita carved on stone.

The decorated electric lamps on the ceiling of the temple and the huge chandeliers inside the temple are quintessential and indescribable examples of ultimate craftsmanship. In a dome on the left side of the temple is sitting Mother Bhagwati, the goddess of power and motherhood, and in a dome on the right side of the temple, the Naths of the three worlds are seated in the meditation posture.

The inner complex of the temple also has a huge and state-of-the-art auditorium by the name of GD Birla Auditorium, where various cultural programs and Bhajan Kirtan are always held. There is also a huge courtyard outside the temple, where you can be in solitude in peace. You can spend some moments of your life sitting comfortably.

Janmashtami at Birla Mandir

As we all know that this is a Hindu temple of Sanatan Dharma, so all the festivals of Hindus are duly celebrate here. Since this temple is especially dedicated to Lord Radha-Krishna, the festival of Janmashtami (the occasion of her birth) is celebrate with much fanfare. It is celebrate with gaiety and pomp.

On this special occasion of Janmashtami, the entire temple is decorate with wreaths, sparkling electric lights, and oil lamps. In this temple, Bhajan Kirtan starts from the evening on the day of Janmashtami and Lord Krishna is born at 12 o’clock in the night.

On this auspicious occasion, devotees of Lord Krishna come here in large numbers to seek his blessings. After birth, to Lord Krishna is duly bath in milk. Tilak is applie after bath. Mangal Geet and Aarti is sing during Tilakbhishek. After the aarti is over, Prasad is distribute to everyone.

  1. Shoes, water bottles, bags, umbrellas, mobiles, cameras, etc. cannot be carrie inside the temple premises. A locker room facility is available for this. where you can keep your belongings. The fee for this locker is only Rs.10.
  2. Since taking pictures and making videos is prohibited at Birla Mandir in Kolkata, you cannot take a camera or phone inside. But you can click the photo from outside the temple.
  3. Even walking in the verandah of the temple is strictly prohibited.
