Jaigarh Fort – History and Mystery

This Fort is an example of magnificent architecture build in the 18th century. Jaisingh II built Jaigad Fort in 1726 AD to protect the Amber Palace. The architect named Vidyadhar designed the fort. Being the highest fort of Jaipur, Jaipur could be monitor from all sides by this fort.

About ‘Jaiwan’ cannon – It is the royal treasure of Jaigarh Fort

The length of the cannon to its end is 31 feet 3 inches and the weight of this cannon is 50 tons. This cannon is capable of hitting for about 50 km. When the Jayawan cannon was first fired for test-firing, its ammunition fell in a town called Chaksu, about 35 km from Jaipur. With its shell, a pond was form in the village which still exists today.

About 100 kg of gun powder was require to fire this cannon once. Due to the high weight of the cannon, it was never take out of the fort nor was it ever use in war.

After the break up of the Mughal dynasty in 1658, the world’s largest cannon ‘Jaiwan’ in the fort of Jaigad was place solely on the guard “Dara Shikoh”. This cannon outpost remained safe as long as the defender Dara Shikoh was alive. The defender “Dara Shikoh” was defeate and killed by his own brother Aurangzeb.
