So let’s know about the Eiffel tower facts and the history of Eiffel Tower-

The Eiffel Tower is an iron structure built on the Champ de Mars in Paris, the capital of France. The local nickname for the Eiffel Tower is “La Dame de Fer”. This tower is named after the engineer of the same company that built and designed this tower, whose name was Gustave Eiffel.

The Eiffel Tower was built from 28 January 1887 to 15 March 1889. It was the world’s first man-made structure which was the tallest structure in the world.

Initially, there was a lot of criticism regarding its design and use. But today it has become a well-known global and cultural icon of France. And is one of the most visited and recognizable buildings in the world.

In 1964, this tower was declared a historical monument. After this, in 1991 it was made a designated part of Paris, Banks of the Senses (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The length of this tower is 330 meters (1083 ft). Talking about its base, its base is square, each side of which is 410 feet (125 meters). Excluding transmitters, the Eiffel Tower is the second tallest and free-standing structure in France after the Millau Viaduct.

About the origin history of Eiffel tower

origin history of Eiffel tower – The credit for the design of the Eiffel Tower structure goes to Miles Naugier and Maurice Koechlin, two senior engineers working for the Compagnie des Establishments Eiffel. The Eiffel Company got the inspiration to build this tower from the Latting Observatory built in New York City in 1853.

Koechlin first made a sketch of his idea of ”a great pylon” while working at home in May 1884. Koechlin described it as having four mesh girders that stand apart at the base and come together at the top. Which are interconnected by truss metal at fixed intervals.

Koechlin shared a sketch of his idea with Eiffel. Eiffel initially approved the further study, showing some enthusiasm for Koechlin’s project. Upon approval, both engineers Miles Naugier and Maurice Koechlin sought help from Stéphane Sauvestre, the company’s head of architecture, to contribute to the tower’s design. Stéphane Sauvestre designed the base of the tower by adding decorative arches. A glass pavilion and other decorative decorations were added to the first level of the tower to form the tower structure.

The first paintings of the Eiffel Tower by Koechlin included parts of the structure of other Paris landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Notre Dame de Paris, and Wendy’s Column. Eiffel supported this new version of the tower, and the company purchased the patent rights to the design, which was jointly built by Miles Naugier, Maurice Koechlin, and Sauvestre.

The design of the tower was exhibited in the autumn of 1884 at the Decorative Arts Exhibition under the name of the Eiffel Company. Eiffel presented his plan to the Société des Engineers Civiles on 30 March 1885.

After emphasizing the practical use of the tower and discussing technical problems, the Société des Engineers Civiles concluded that the tower would symbolize the century of modern engineers’ art, industry, and science. Also, this monument will be built to show gratitude to France.

In 1886, Jules Gravy was appointed as President of France and Dord Lockroy as Minister of Trade. Then the budget was passed for the exhibition in France. Lockroy announced the change in terms of an open competition to be held on 1 May as the centerpiece of the exhibition. This led to a foregone conclusion on the selection of Eiffel’s design, as a study was to include entries for a 300 m (984 ft) four-sided metal tower on the Champ de Mars.

In those days, this 300-meter tower was considered a difficult engineering endeavor. Subsequently, a commission was set up on 12 May 1886 to investigate the plans of the Eiffel Company and its rivals. A month later, the Commission decided in favor of the Eiffel company that the proposals of all companies except Eiffel were either impractical or the details lacked clarity.

After some debate and negotiations about choosing the right location for the construction of the Eiffel Tower, a contract was signed on 8 January 1887. Eiffel signed this contract to act in his capacity instead of as a representative of his company. The contract provided him with 1.5 million francs for construction costs. This was less than a quarter of the estimated cost amount of 6.5 million francs. In addition, Eiffel was to receive all proceeds from the commercial use of the tower during the exhibition and for the next 20 years. He later set up a separate company to manage the tower, investing half of the required capital himself.

Artists’ protest

At that time this tower was the subject of controversy and debate. Those who thought that the construction of this tower was impossible, strongly condemned and criticized it. Also objected to the artistic basis of this tower. Because no structure had ever been built to a height of 300 meters or 200 meters before the Eiffel Tower was built.

As work began on the Champ de Mars, a “committee of three hundred” (one member for each meter of the tower’s height) was formed, led by the prominent architect Charles Garnier. The committee also included some of the most important people in the art such as Guy de Maupassant, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Charles Gounod, and Jules Massenet. A petition titled “Artists against the Eiffel Tower”, published by Le Temps on 14 February 1887, was sent to the Minister of Works and the Exhibition Commissioner, Adolf Alfand. Gustave Eiffel, published in Le Temps, compared the Eiffel Tower to a pyramid.

Guillaume Apollinaire’s Calligraphy on the Tower

Gustave Eiffel responded to all the criticism by comparing his tower to the pyramids of Egypt. He explained and explained that “My tower will be the tallest building ever built by man. Wouldn’t it also be grand in its own way? And why would something admirable in Egypt become disgusting and ridiculous in Paris?”. These criticisms were also addressed by Dord Lockroy in a letter of support to Alfond, who sarcastically stated that “Given the grandeur of the rhythm, the beauty of the metaphors, the delicate and precise style of its grandeur, one cannot say that he could do it.” could.”

According to him “perhaps this protest was the result of the collaboration of some of the most famous poets and writers of the time.” According to him, the protest was irrelevant as the project was finalized months in advance, and construction on the tower was already underway.

Indeed, Garnier was a member of the Tower Commission which had examined the various proposals and did not object. Some protesters changed their minds after the tower was built. Guy de Maupassant is believed to have had lunch at the tower’s restaurant every day because it was a place in Paris where the tower was not visible.

By 1918, it had become a symbol of Paris and France, when Guillaume Apollinaire wrote a nationalist poem in the shape of a tower (calligraphy) to express his feelings about the war against Germany. Today, it is widely considered a remarkable piece of structural art and is often proudly featured in films and literature.

Exhibition and opening of 1889

The main structural work of the tower was completed in late March 1889 and, on 31 March, Eiffel celebrated it by taking a group of government officials along with representatives of the press to the top of the tower. However, the lift was not operational yet, so the climb was done on foot, and it took over an hour. Finally, at 2:35 pm, Eiffel unfurled a big tricolor with a 25-gun salute on the first level.

However, work on the lift and facilities was yet to be done. Therefore the tower was not opened to the public until nine days after the exhibition opened on 6 May. But even after this, the lift work was not completed. About 30,000 visitors climbed the 1,710-step staircase to the top before the lifts entered service on 26 May. Tickets for entry are 2 francs for the first level, 3 francs for the second, and 5 francs for the top, and are kept at half price on Sundays. By the end of the exhibition, the number of visitors was 1,896,987.

After dark, the tower was lit by hundreds of gas lamps. Two searchlights mounted on a circular rail were used to illuminate the various buildings of the exhibition. The daily opening and closing of the exhibition were announced by a cannon at the top of the tower.

Tower lights at night during the exhibition

On the second level of the tower was a French newspaper office and a printing press. Whose name was “Le Figaro”. This office created a special souvenir edition called “Le Figaro de la Tour”. There was also a patisserie where any sweet or salty food made of flour, water, and dietary fat (such as butter) was found.

There was a post office at the top of the tower. Here visitors could send letters and postcards. These letters and postcards were used by visitors as souvenirs of their travels. The walls of the tower were framed with frescoes. Sheets of paper were placed on the walls each day for visitors to record their impressions of the tower.

Famous visitors to the tower included Sarah Bernhardt, Prince of Wales, “Buffalo Bill” Cody (his Wild West show was a highlight in the exhibit), and Thomas Edison. Eiffel invited Thomas Edison to his private apartment at the top of the tower. Here Edison presented Eiffel with a phonograph, a new invention, and one of the highlights of the exhibition. Edison also signed the guest book with this message.

Since Eiffel had a permit for the tower to stand for 20 years, the parish planned to demolish it in 1909. But this tower proved valuable for radiotelegraphy. So the plan to demolish it was postponed. It became an important part of the International Time Service after the permit expired in 1910.

Eiffel used his apartment at the top of the tower to conduct experiments on meteorological observations and the action of air resistance on falling bodies.

tower light copyright

The tower and its image have been publicly copyrighted since 1993, 70 years after Eiffel’s death. To mark the tower’s 100th anniversary in 1989, a French court ruled in June 1990, whereby a special light display on the tower was copyright protected by an “original visual creation”. In March 1992, the French Court of Cassation upheld this decision. The court ruling made it illegal in France and some other countries to publish contemporary photographs of a tower illuminated at night for commercial use without permission. For this reason, it is often rare to find pictures or videos of the tower lit at night on stock image sites.

Terms of construction of the Eiffel Tower

After the construction budget of this tower was passed, its design was again studied closely by experts. During the investigation, some defects were found in it. After the improvement in which the order to build the tower was issued. But still, the construction of the Eiffel Tower could not start immediately, as the engineer Gustave Eiffel had to sign a contract regarding the site of the construction of the tower, in which certain terms and conditions were written regarding the construction of this tower-

According to the first terms and conditions, “The Eiffel Company itself shall be a part of the Eiffel Tower Project. Also, the Tower shall be represented by the Eiffel Company only.”

According to the second term and condition, “The Eiffel Tower shall be demolished after 20 years of construction.”

According to the third rule and condition, “The tower is to be built using only iron whose height should be about 300 meters and the distance between the four pillars of the Eiffel Tower should be about 125 meters.”

Construction

Eiffel Tower Foundation

Work on the foundation of the Eiffel Tower began on 28 January 1887. And on 30 June the foundation was completed. After this ironwork started. At this stage, the Drawing Office produced 1,700 general drawings of the tower and 3,629 detailed drawings of the required 18,038 different parts.

No drilling or shaping was done at the tower site. If a part does not fit, it is sent back to the factory to be replaced. In total, 18,038 pieces were stitched together using 2.5 million rivets.

At first, the four legs of the tower were built as cantilevered. But about halfway through the construction of the first level of the tower was stopped long enough to build a wooden scaffold.

A small “creeper” crane was installed on each leg, designed to lift the tower. He used guides for lifts that were supposed to fit on four legs. The important phase of connecting the legs on the first level was completed by March 1888.

Although the metalwork was crafted with the utmost attention to detail, small adjustments were made to ensure that the legs were properly aligned; Hydraulic jacks were installed in the shoes at the base of each foot, capable of applying a force of 800 tons. However, 300 on-site workers were involved in the construction. Because of Eiffel’s safety precautions and the use of movable gangways, railings, and screens, only one person died.

tower construction process

  1. Beginning of construction of metalwork – on 18 July 1887
  2. Build feet from scaffolding – on 7 December 1887
  3. Completion of the first level – on 20 March 1888
  4. Construction of Phase II started – on 15 May 1888
  5. Completion of the second level – on 21 August 1888
  6. Upper stage construction – on 26 December 1888
  7. Construction of the dome – on 15 March 1889

use of lifts

Equipping the tower with adequate and safe passenger lifts for climbing the tower was a major concern of the government commission which was overseeing the exhibition. The construction of the lifts to reach the first level of the tower was relatively simple and easy. Because the legs of the tower were wide enough at the bottom and straight enough to fit into the track. A contract was awarded to the French company Roux, Combaluzier, and Leppe for the first two lifts in the tower. Which is connected at the feet of East and West.

It was a daunting task to install the lifts on the second level of the tower. Because it was impossible to establish a straight track in it. No French company wanted to start work on it. Subsequently, the European arm of Otis Brothers & Company submitted an offer but it was rejected. Because the fair’s charter prohibited the use of any foreign material in the construction of the tower. Bidding was made for this work and the deadline was also extended but no French company came forward for it. The contract for the work was finally awarded to the Otis Company in July 1887. However, Otis was confident that the contract would be awarded to him and had already begun to design for it.

The original lifts for travel between the second and third levels of the tower were supplied by Léon Edoux. A pair of 81 m (266 ft) hydraulic rams were fitted on the second level, reaching the third level about halfway through. A lift car was installed on top of these rams: cables ran from the top of this car to the mirrors on the third level and back to the second car. Each car covered only half the distance between the second and third levels and passengers had to change lifts halfway through a small gangway. Each of the 10-tonne cars carried 65 passengers.

Eiffel Tower Floor Structure Construction

The Eiffel Tower is built on three floors, which are as follows-

1st floor

The area of the first floor of the Eiffel Tower is about 4200 square meters. And the height of the first floor is 57 meters. A lattice balcony has been built around this floor of the tower, which also houses binoculars and a panoramic table for passengers. So that the travelers coming here can see the wonderful view of the beauty of Paris from this tower. About three thousand tourists can come to visit this floor simultaneously.

second floor

The area of the second floor of this tower is 1650 square meters, whose height is 115 meters from the ground. On this floor, you will find many shopping stalls and cafeterias. Tourists can also take a beautiful view of the city from this floor of the Eiffel Tower. A restaurant is also available on the first and second floors. Here you can eat delicious food.

third floor

The height of the third floor of the Eiffel Tower is 275 meters from the ground. The capacity of this floor is to accommodate 400 tourists at a time. The third floor of the tower is covered with glass from all sides. On the third floor also you will see binoculars kept, with the help of which you can see the beautiful view of Paris.

use of metal in tower construction

The tower is constructed in the shape of a square. Metal has been used to make it. The Eiffel Tower’s puddle iron (wrought iron) weighs 7,300 tons. With the addition of lifts, shops, and antennae, the total weight of the tower is approximately 10,100 tonnes. About 18 thousand pieces of iron have been used in this tower, which is very well connected with each other with the help of 2.5 million nails.

About 20 thousand bulbs used

This indescribable Eiffel Tower in Paris is always lit with light, for this, about 20 thousand bulbs have been installed in it. But since the year 2013, the lights of the Eiffel Tower are switched off daily at around 1 o’clock at the night for the purpose of saving light.

wind resistance

Eiffel and his team (experienced bridge builders) understood the importance of wind resistance. They knew that if they were going to build the tallest structure in the world, they had to make sure the tower could withstand the resistance of the wind. Eiffel and his team overdesigned all parts of the tower to ensure maximum resistance to the wind. Let us tell you that the Eiffel Tower rises to a height of up to 9 centimeters (3.5 inches) in the air.

number of stairs in the tower

The number of stairs built in the Eiffel Tower is about 1 thousand 665. In 2015, 6.91 million people climbed the structure.

If you use the stairs instead of the lift to reach the top of the Eiffel Tower, then for this you will have to cross more than one and a half thousand steps.

However, this modern tower also has a lift facility, with the help of which the top of the tower can be reached. It costs about 15 euros to take the elevator of this beautiful Eiffel Tower from bottom to top.

The special thing is that this lift of the tower travels about 103,000 kilometers in a year, which is about two and a half times more than the circumference of the earth.

Eiffel Tower Maintenance

To protect the tower from corrosion, 60 tonnes of paint is used every seven years. The tower has been completely repainted at least 19 times since its construction. In 2001, when “lead paint” was in use, the practice was discontinued due to environmental concerns.

passenger lift system

So far, the arrangement of the lifts of the tower has been changed several times. Given the elasticity of the cables and the time it takes to align the cars with the landing, each lift, in normal service, takes an average of 8 minutes and 50 seconds, with an average of 1 minute and 15 seconds to make a round trip. The average travel time between the levels of the tower takes 1 minute. Since the mechanism requires frequent lubrication and maintenance. So public access is often restricted. The rope system of the North Tower is seen as soon as visitors exit the elevator.

Gustave Eiffel’s apartment – residence

When the tower was originally built, the first level contained three restaurants. One Russian, one French, one “Anglo-American bar”, and one Flemish bar. After the exhibition closed, the Flemish restaurant was converted into a 250-seat theatre. A promenade 2.6 meters (8 ft 6 in) wide was built outside the first level. At the top of the tower, there were laboratories for various experiments, and a small apartment reserved for Gustave Eiffel to entertain the guests. This apartment has now been opened to the public. The apartments feature period decor and lifelike effigies of Eiffel and some of his notable guests.

In June (in May 2016) an apartment was built on the first level to accommodate the four competition winners during the “UEFA Euro 2016 Football Tournament” in Paris. The apartments include a kitchen, two bedrooms, a lounge, and views of Parisian landmarks including the Seine, Sacré-Cure, and the Arc-de-Triomphe.

height of the Eiffel tower

The length of each side of the Eiffel Tower is about 125 meters and the height of its antenna is about 116 meters, while its total height is 324 meters (1063 ft), roughly equivalent to an 81-story building. Whereas the upper part of the Eiffel Tower swings about 6 to 7 centimeters in the air.

height of the Eiffel tower above sea level

The height of the Eiffel Tower is about 335 meters above sea level. Let us tell you that during which the Eiffel Tower, which is considered a symbol of love, was built, during that time it was the tallest building in the world.

Names engraved on the Eiffel Tower

On the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel has engraved the names of 72 French scientists, mathematicians, and engineers who contributed to the tower’s construction. There was a lot of opposition from the artists in the initial days regarding the construction of the tower. This led Eiffel to refer to it as a “call to science”.

Aesthetics of the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is painted mainly in three colors. Lighter colors were used at the top and progressively darker at the bottom of the tower. It was originally reddish-brown. This changed the color of the tower to bronze in 1968, which became known as “Eiffel Tower Brown”.

Eiffel’s popularity

More than 250 million people have visited the tower since the tower’s completion in 1889. In the year 2015, there were 6.91 million visitors. On an average 25,000 people climb the tower daily. This tower is one such paid monument which is the most visited by the people in the whole world.

communication system atop the Eiffel tower

The Eiffel Tower has been used for radio broadcasting since the beginning of the 20th century. Until the 1950s, on the Avenue de Sufran and the Champ de Mars, sets of aerial wires ran from the dome to the anchor. These were connected by longwave transmitters in the form of small bunkers. A permanent underground radio station was built near the South Pillar in 1909. This underground radio station still exists today. On 20 November 1913, the Paris Observatory exchanged wireless signals with the United States Naval Observatory using the Eiffel Tower as an aerial, which used an aerial in Arlington, Virginia. The broadcast was aimed at Paris and Washington, D.C. Radio and digital television signals are broadcast from the Eiffel Tower to measure the difference in longitude from then to today.

digital television system

In 1957, a television antenna was installed on the tower for the first time, increasing the tower’s height by 18.7 m (61.4 ft). During the work carried out in the year 2000, the height of the tower was increased by 5.3 m (17.4 ft), taking the current height of the tower to 324 m (1063 ft). Analog television signals from the Eiffel Tower were turned off on 8 March 2011.

Since May 2019, it is managed by three-star chef Frédéric Anton. It is named after the famous science-fiction writer Jules Verne. Additionally, there is also a champagne bar at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

From 1937 to 1981, there was a restaurant near the top of the tower. The restaurant was removed for structural reasons. Engineers investigated and determined that the restaurant was too heavy and caused the tower to collapse. For this reason, the restaurant was sold to an American restaurant and moved to New York and then to New Orleans. It was remodeled as a restaurant on the edge of the New Orleans Garden District and later as an event hall.
